Islam, Modernity and the Enlightenment: A New Perspective

Islam, Modernity and The Enlightenment: A New Perspective. A Discovery Project supported by The Australian Research Council (2006-2008) Chief Investigator: Associate Professor Samer Akkach, Centre for Asian and Middle Eastern Architecture (CAMEA), The University of Adelaide, Australia, Team members: Samer Akkach, Selen Morkoc, Julie Nichols, Elise Kamleh, Faris Akbar Hajamaideen, Verdy Kwee. Islam and the West Today’s violent encounters between Islam and the West have unveiled serious crises in understanding on both sides, and called for a rethinking of the ways in which the relationship between Islam and the West are constructed and presented in contemporary discourses. Muslim and Western scholars are asking what went wrong and searching for new ways into the future. This project contributes to the rethinking process by revisiting a critical moment in the history of the relationship between Islam and the West: the moment of the Enlightenment and the emergence of modernity.
